No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century. --Mark Twain Almost everyone is familiar with the line Till death do us part from traditional marriage vows. In America today, using those words in a marriage ceremony is almost ironic due to the high number of marriages that end in divorce. In 1992, the U.S. Census Bureau determined that about 4 out of 10 first marriages...may eventually end in divorce. The Census Bureau also determined that 3.4 years is the median length of marriage before divorce among first†¦show more content†¦Overall, national surveys point to money as one of the leading topics that couples argue about. In a survey by a credit counseling organization, 60% of married people interviewed responded that they fight with their spouses over money. Stanley and Markham also state that couples report fighting about money more than anything else; children is the second most fought about issue. If two people love each other enough to commit to each other for the rest of their lives, why is money often enough to tear the m apart? David Bridgeman, a marriage and family therapist, states that money is often a motivator. Some people strive to do well at work because of money, and can judge their success on how much money they make. Not making enough money or having financial difficulty can lead to a lower feeling of self-worth for these people. Bridgeman also states that money is often used as a way of expressing feelings. One example of this is the spending of it, which gives many people pleasure. One young couple that I know are a good example of these issues. Lets call them Matt and Tina. Matt worked all of the time, spending 50-60 hours a week at work. Because he was in sales, he often had to work late hours, leaving little time for his wife and young son. His wife enjoyed the benefits of his hard work and loved to spend money, but she resented that he worked such long hours.
